GENERAL OVERVIEW
The Program Manager
for Pressure Ulcer
Prevention & Management provides clinical, educational and
programmatic leadership in the care of the hospitalized adult at risk
for/with pressure ulcers `and in the development of clinical knowledge
and practice expertise among nursing staff in this focused area of
clinical practice. In collaboration with nurse leaders, clinical
nursing experts and members of other clinical disciplines, he/she
assures that educational initiatives and programmatic structures are
designed and function to develop and strengthen the clinical knowledge
and practice skills of nurses whose practice is at various stages along
the beginner to expert continuum. He/she participates in the
selection
and evaluation of the clinical knowledge/practice development of
“unit-based nurse champions” participating in pressure ulcer taskforce.
He/she is also responsible for hiring, training supervising and
evaluating additional program staff associated with the initiative to
fulfill program goals. As a leader in the department of Nursing, the
program manager works to achieve the stated goals and objectives of the
department.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Clinical knowledge & practice development
1.
Using adult learning principles and scientific evidence that informs
strategies for developing nursing knowledge & practice, creates and
implements educational initiatives that enhances the practice expertise
of nurses in all levels of practice.
2. Assess and evaluates the clinical needs of adult
patients and the learning needs of nursing staff.
3.
Collaborates with WOCN’s and other clinical leaders and staff in
the
development of intra-interdisciplinary evidenced-based clinical
guidelines that support practice delivery, quality and cost outcomes
for individual patients and populations of patients.
4.
Assures that educational programs are evaluated for quality and
effectiveness and that outcome data continuously informs the refinement
of programs on a regular basis.
B. Clinical Consultation
1.
Content expert – provides consultee-centered consultation with a
primary goal of assessing nurse’s learning needs and confidence in
managing clinical situation.
2.
Possesses clinical knowledge and judgment to assist nurses in planning
care and evaluating outcomes for complex patient problems.
3. Role models expert clinical care, creative
problem-solving and effective communication and teamwork
behavior.
C. Program leadership/management
1.
Collaborates with nurse leaders, nurse experts and clinical staff to
develop goals, objectives and program design for the pressure ulcer
prevention and management program.
i. To prioritize areas of focus and attention.
ii. To evaluate efficacy, cost and patient response of
relevant clinical products and technologies
2.
Collaborate with quality program manager regarding quality improvement
reliability and statistical process control theory, PDSA methodology,
program evaluation and data analysis/display pertinent to this program.
3. Incorporates relevant hospital metrics and benchmarking
data into program design and utilization of resources.
4. Utilizes principles and processes of planned change to
improve systems, process and care practices.
5.
Identifies staff for program implementation and has authority to hire,
train, supervise and evaluate clinical staff associated with this
program.
D. Scholarly Inquiry
1.
Seeks opportunities to add to the knowledge of the discipline by
disseminating work related to nursing practice development and
programmatic outcomes in scholarly journals and at professional
meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A Master’s Degree in Nursing from accredited college or
university.
2. Current license to practice professional nursing in
State of Massachusetts.
3. Demonstrated expertise in the care of adults at risk
for/with pressure ulcers and other immobility related clinical
phenomena.
4. Experience in creating and implementing educational
programs for clinical staff.
5. Project management experience and demonstrated success
with organizational change strongly preferred.
6. Ability to teach, coach and mentor staff.
7.
Demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with clinical and
leadership staff and building and managing intra-disciplinary and
interdisciplinary partnerships.

GENERALSUMMARY/OVERVIEWSTATEMENT:
Wound Ostomy nurse for Massachusetts General Hospital inpatient and
outpatient
settings. Caring for ostomy patients through the continuum of care by
marking
pre-operatively, seeing while inpatient, and then following ongoing at
Stoma
Clinic. Complex abdomen and fistula patients seen inpatient as well as
outpatient setting with attending surgeons and in surgical clinic. Many
types
of wound patients seen in surgical clinic for development of a plan of
care,
sharp debridement and coordination of multi discipline care.
Professional
Development:
·Maintains
and updates
clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education
practices.
·Adheres to
Department of
Nursing requirements for required training.
·Identifies
specific
learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them.
QUALIFICATIONS:
·Current
licensure as a
registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
·Bachelor of
Science.
·Competent
phlebotomy
skills.
·CPR Training.
·Maintain
competent level
of clinical knowledge through ongoing education at approved CME classes.
·Is
knowledgeable and
compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements,
including
hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of
the
job), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations,
and Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
